The Puducherry Airport is set to become busier with new routes being planned. SpiceJet will resume flights on the Puducherry – Bengaluru sector from February 15th and other airlines are studying the options of operating flights in and out of the coastal town.
The success of the Pondicherry – Hyderabad flights launched by SpiceJet in August 2017 has prompted the airline to now also resume its services to Bengaluru. After it suspended operations in 2014 the airline has done a lot of groundwork to figure out the best schedule for the Puducherry – Bengaluru flight so that passengers would have convenient connecting flights out of Bangalore. The proposed schedule would be that the flight departs Puducherry at 10:50 AM and arrives Bengaluru at 12:10 noon. Passengers would then be able to catch connecting flights to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.
Air Odisha has received approval from the DGCA to operate flights on the Chennai – Puducherry – Salem – Bengaluru sector and more airlines will certainly be looking to provide services to Puducherry. IndiGo has shown an interest in starting operations too. The increase in flights will certainly be a boost for the tourism sector in Puducherry and equally facilitate travel for its residents.
Talks are also underway between government agencies to enable the expansion of the runway so that larger aircraft could land at the airport in the future. This would allow more airlines to provide services to the region.
Pondicherry’s air connectivity seems to have taken off in a big way.
