The old court building situated on the beach road will get a new life as a Heritage Museum once the ongoing renovation works are over. On display will be a collection of artefacts dating back to Pondicherry’s French era.
The iconic building, dating back to 1766, was used for various purposes during its history, it was functioning as a court from 1956 up until 2008 when it was cleared for renovations.
While INTACH Pondicherry is guiding the renovation work, an NGO, the Thazhi Foundation has been actively raising awareness on the importance for the preservation of history and culture and the need for museums in safeguarding this heritage.
The museum would display books, documents, maps & images among other items as well as typical clothes from Pondicherry’s Indo-French period.
Other than the law museum the building would also house a library and a ground floor hall that could be used as a research or conference room.
Once the renovations are completed, this striking colonial style building will surely become one of the must-visit-places on Pondicherry’s beautiful beach promenade.
